Teenage Dressing and the Workplace

Guess what? I’m a teenager now with no acne! I am about to make important decisions on my own! Now it’s time to move on. It’s about time to act more like an adult.

In today’s times, more than ever, teenagers are influenced by movies, television and music, especially video music productions. Maybe that’s the way they make the jump from childhood to adulthood particularly when it comes to dressing. It’s cool to wear some of the clothes we see through these medians. In reality though, very few teenagers have the looks, body and poise to be that highly desired singer or model in real life!

So let’s face it; when the acne disappears its time to dress more like a responsible person; certainly when you start looking for that first job to make money for dating, car insurance, and other necessities.

No one expects a young man to be wearing a Palm Beach suit, Hilfiger tie and wing tip shoes. No one expects a young woman to be wearing Jones New York suits, Claiborne blouses and Nine West shoes. But, there is lots of room between that and shorts that hang below the knee, baggy t-shirts, sneakers, hip-hugging pants or skirts, tank-tops and spiked or multi-colored hair!

So where is the middle ground here when you try for that job? You might try these ideas:

• Leather-type shoes with socks or hose
• Nicely pressed pants – not necessarily dress pants or pants suit for women
• Nicely pressed shirt or blouse
• Washed, combed hair
• Go easy on the jewelry and leave the visible piercings out

These are fairly easy, simple things to consider; but it is truly amazing how many younger people will go into a business with their pants hanging below their boxers or a tank top leaving nothing for imagination to fill out a job application. If this is you; stay at home, you will not get the job!
