Most job seekers polish up their image, resume and application.
They research the answers to the “tough” interview
questions in order to “stand out” in the hiring
process. But once they have the job, they assume the only
work they need to do is the job they were hired for. However,
if you put the same diligence into enhancing your image
on the job that you gave the job seeking process, you
can not only ensure that you will keep the job but you
will move ahead much quicker than your less diligent co-workers.
Here are some proven strategies based on input from employers
that can greatly enhance your employability and help you
become an asset to your employer.
1. Take the initiative – Don’t
wait for someone to come to you to explain your job or
how the company works. Ask questions to quickly gain an
understanding of how the company operates and how you
fit in. If you follow the strategies list, success will
come quickly.
2. Know the rules of the road –
Clarify what is expected of you, not only in your position
but as an employee of this company. Find out who you have
to please and what you have to do to please them. How
will you know if you have done what is expected? Most
employers will be happy to answer your questions and will
respect you for asking.
3. Observe the dress code – Every
company has an image and it is important that you fit
this image if you want to move ahead with the company.
Notice how the boss dresses and follow suit. Save your
individualistic style for after hours pursuits.
4. Find a mentor – Find someone
who has been around for a while, appears knowledgeable
about the company and is well respected. Be careful that
you do not align yourself with a maverick who thinks he
knows more than the boss. If you want to be successful
with the company, you need to learn to play by their rules.
A mentor will help you avoid many pitfalls along the way
to success. And don’t worry that they will be annoyed
that you are bothering them, most people will be flattered
that you asked.
5. Increase Your Knowledge - Read and
study everything you can about your chosen profession.
Find out what your employer feels is essential knowledge.
Ask your boss or your mentor to recommend books or articles
they think will be helpful.
6. Develop your people skills –
Did you know that people who are good team players (helpful
and easy to get along with) are valued more highly than
people who have better technical skills but are hard to
get along with? Treat others with respect and kindness.
Never gossip or criticize others, they will find out and
that is what they will remember about you. You will lose
their respect as well as their trust.
7. Volunteer for additional duties –
Volunteering to handle additional assignments not only
makes you more valuable to your employer but also allows
you to learn new skills that will make you more promotable
in the future. You may even get the opportunity to learn
to do jobs which you do not currently qualify. You can
greatly increase you opportunities both inside and outside
of the company with this simple strategy.
8. Be an eager learner - Learning is
a life-long pursuit, make it one of yours. Show your enthusiasm
when new methods or systems are introduced. Most people
resist change or take a negative approach to it. Be the
leader in embracing changes and point out the positive
aspects of the situation. Changes will occur with less
resistance and your boss will love you for it.
9. Focus on progress not perfection –
Everyone makes mistakes. When you blow it, quickly own
up to it and find out what you can do to correct the situation.
Denying it will only make the situation worse. If you
take responsibility for your mistakes, it won’t
be long before your boss will be trusting you with greater
responsibilities within the company.
10. Ask for feedback - Ask for feedback
on how you are doing and what
you can do to improve your performance. Don’t make
a pest of yourself, once a quarter is probably sufficient
to sit down with your boss and ask for his/her advice.
Again, they will appreciate your initiative and see you
as a motivated member of the team.
